What are you passionate about, and how do you use your voice/talent to make a difference?
As a kid, I would watch movies that would amaze me. These movies would transport me to another world through the magic of lights and sound, engaging all aspects of curiosity, creativity, and imagination. Then it all clicked. I could make movies, television, and theater that would give others an opportunity to experience that amazement. This takes form in various endeavors, including live broadcasts of orchestra concerts, directing theater productions for both students and the community, and my role as festival director for the Sioux City International Film Festival. This is a means to offer opportunities for both artists and audiences. To showcase local and international talent through creative projects and ultimately share those productions with an audience.
What is your vision for the future of Siouxland?
There is an opportunity here for everyone to participate in and experience creative endeavors, and I would like to see that continue to grow through my generation and the next. Creativity extends beyond the arts through unique businesses, restaurants, and events. I would also love to see businesses, organizations, and individuals working together to expand the capacity for creativity in Siouxland. I want to see an authentic, unique, diverse, and collaborative community in Siouxland that cannot be found anywhere else.
What are you doing to make that happen?
Each October, through the Sioux City International Film Festival, we present approximately 50 short films from Siouxland, the Midwest, and around the world. Along with filmmakers, film industry professionals, and guests, downtown Sioux City hosts a weekend of film experiences and education open to the Siouxland community and beyond. I also contribute behind the scenes to many organizations with my time and talents, supporting their needs for creative skill sets to the best of my ability.
How can people help you make that happen?
Be curious and open to trying new experiences. Buy a ticket to the show, the symphony, a block of short films at the film festival, experience an exhibition at the art center, or catch a community theatre production. This small show of support does so much more than help our organizations financially; it also shows the people involved that there is support in this community. Take the chance on something new. You might find something that amazes you.
