What challenges have you experienced in Siouxland?

Moving to Siouxland from another place, I have faced several challenges due to cultural differences between Siouxland and my place of origin.

It became apparent almost immediately that I was different from everyone else. As an African American, I met many people who, up until the point that we all met in college, had never met a black person in their entire lives. I dealt with derogatory remarks, had a hard time fitting in, and was left out of trips and events that everyone participated in. It was tough. 

I’ve been targeted at my job because my personal views about the experiences of black and brown people in America offended people, and those offended people used their influence with the supervisors of my job to sit me down and tell me to be quiet. In other words, you can only share your thoughts and opinions when they align with our views.

I have dealt with loneliness, even in a crowded room, because the cultural differences are so apparent that it is hard to truly relate to many of the people I have met.

How has Siouxland been welcoming?

All this being said, I have also met some of the nicest people I have ever met in Siouxland.

The love I experienced from those people healed wounds inside my heart, challenged lies inside my mind, and remedied the loneliness I deal with daily. Those people became a home away from home and a family for me in the absence of my blood family.

What do you want the people of Siouxland to know?

I would like people in Siouxland to remain curious and open to those from different walks of life and geographic locations than they are. Everyone’s culture is different but beautiful, and if you only stick with people who share your culture and history, you will miss out on the opportunity to grow, learn, and expand your world. You will also miss the humanitarian opportunities to be a home for the homeless and a help to the helpless. 

Although I have faced many challenges in the Siouxland area, I have grown to love this place, and I see it as an amazing place to start a life and grow as a young adult. The Siouxland area has a special place in my heart!

¿Qué desafíos has enfrentado en Siouxland?

Al mudarme a Siouxland desde otro lugar, me enfrenté a varios desafíos debido a las diferencias culturales entre esta zona y mi lugar de origen.

Casi de inmediato se hizo evidente que yo era diferente a los demás. Como afroamericana, conocí a muchas personas que, hasta el momento en que coincidimos en la universidad, nunca habían conocido a una persona Afroamericana en toda su vida. Tuve que lidiar con comentarios despectivos, me costó encajar y quedé excluida de viajes y eventos en los que participaban todos los demás. Fue duro.

Fui el blanco de críticas en mi trabajo porque mis opiniones personales sobre las experiencias de las personas negras y de color en Estados Unidos ofendían a otros; esas personas ofendidas usaron su influencia ante mis supervisores para obligarme a guardar silencio. En otras palabras: solo puedes compartir tus pensamientos y opiniones cuando coinciden con nuestros puntos de vista.

He lidiado con la soledad, incluso estando rodeada de gente, porque las diferencias culturales son tan marcadas que resulta difícil conectar verdaderamente con muchas de las personas que he conocido.

¿Cómo ha sido la acogida en Siouxland?

Dicho esto, también he conocido en Siouxland a algunas de las personas más amables que he tratado jamás.

El amor que recibí de esas personas sanó heridas en mi corazón, desafió las mentiras en mi mente y alivió la soledad con la que lidio a diario. Esas personas se convirtieron en un hogar lejos del hogar y en una familia para mí, ante la ausencia de mi propia familia biológica.

¿Qué te gustaría que supiera la gente de Siouxland?

Me gustaría que los habitantes de Siouxland mantuvieran la curiosidad y la apertura hacia personas de entornos y procedencias geográficas distintos a los suyos. La cultura de cada persona es diferente pero hermosa; si te limitas a relacionarte solo con quienes comparten tu cultura e historia, perderás la oportunidad de crecer, aprender y ampliar tu mundo. También te perderás la oportunidad humanitaria de ser un hogar para quien no lo tiene y un apoyo para quien está desamparado.

Aunque he enfrentado muchos desafíos en la zona de Siouxland, he llegado a amar este lugar y lo considero un sitio maravilloso para comenzar una vida y crecer como joven adulta. ¡La zona de Siouxland ocupa un lugar especial en mi corazón!
