Ave Medical Laser Spa has been a staple of the Siouxland community for 17 years. It all started in a small office on Historic Fourth Street.
“We decided to expand, but we never thought we would grow as quickly as we did across the tri-state area! We have people coming up from Omaha. We were bursting at the seams, so we moved from where we were eight years ago to where we are now at 1201 4th Street. It’s a privilege to serve the Siouxland area,” shared Deb Hoesing, an RN at Ave Medical Laser Spa.
Ave is led by Dr. Paula Hicks, M.D., who received her training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is board-certified in Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society for Cosmetic Physicians. She has a medical license in both Iowa and South Dakota. Dr. Hicks has more than 20 years of cosmetic surgery experience. In 2009, she started to focus on full-body cosmetic surgery. These surgeries include liposuction, fat transfers, and mini tummy tucks. Education is something Dr. Hicks holds in high regard, and she continues to stay up-to-date with the latest in medical innovations and cutting-edge technology.
As with any medical treatment, it is recommended that your primary care physician be informed of any procedures you will undergo and that they are kept up to date with any lab results and further testing that may be necessary to ensure your health is in good standing.
“We offer an array of services, from Botox filler to lasers and various skin treatments, including the removal of dark lines on your face, fine lines, and wrinkles, as well as eyelid surgery and liposuction,” shared Deb.
However, the place where the treatments are held is as important as what the Spa offers its clients. The spa’s office is welcoming, with its signature scent and the smiles that greet you at the front counter when you walk in. You start to relax and feel at ease. Now, it’s time to stop and take care of you.
“My favorite treatment is the Beauty Moxi Stacked BBL Line. It primarily helps with rosacea, dark spots, and sunspots that have accumulated on your face over the years. They’ll perform a Moxi treatment, which involves placing a laser beneath the skin to rejuvenate it. It also helps to stimulate collagen. What’s nice about combining those two treatments is that there is very little downtime. We all live very busy lives. We’re out doing things with our kids, family, work, etc. With the BBL Moxi combination, I would say your downtime is likely to be three days. You’ll notice small, dark spots on the skin’s surface, which will slough off within a couple of days. You can wear make-up 24 hours after a treatment,” explained Felicia, an RN and Cool Sculpt Clinician.
Broadband light (BBL) treatment is a laser-based procedure that can enhance the appearance of the skin by reducing redness, discoloration, and fine lines. It may also minimize rosacea, spider veins, pores, and lines. It has been suggested that the treatments can slow down the signs of aging and make the skin appear tighter, more even, and more radiant.
Moxi was created from the idea of prejuvenation for those who were just starting to use skincare treatments and didn’t require deep work but simply touch-ups.
After having a treatment at the Spa, upkeep is required to keep their clients looking and feeling their best. To look more youthful and feel more vibrant, Ave offers products to help you maintain your appearance by incorporating them into a daily routine that helps restore and revive your skin.
“It’s like going to the dentist. Consistency is key. Dr. Hicks is very strongly into medical-grade products, something that gets through the top layer of skin. All of our products are medical grade. Dr. Hicks puts a lot of research into them. We do offer year-long programs. I encourage people to come in for a consultation. They can be very precise and oriented toward your concerns. Some people want something in-depth, while others wish to have something done on the surface. It’s just a personal choice and preference. We discuss your concerns and the science behind them. That’s a huge thing. It’s fun to get to know people and learn about their concerns. What I love more than anything else is when someone comes in, and I can show them their first pictures from 10 or 17 years ago, and they look better today than they did back then,” replied Deb.
Hormone Replacement Therapy is popular among women and men. I started it approximately 10 years ago, and I’ve found that it makes me feel good. Men come in with lower testosterone levels, and that has taken off, as has our diet program,” stated Deb.
“The complimentary consultation is first. You call in and make an appointment, and then the first thing we want to know is what are your symptoms. Then, they need to examine the correlation between your symptoms and your blood work labs. You come in, we tell you about hormonal replacement therapy, what it is, and what your symptoms are; we do a blood draw. In a week, we’ll go over your blood draw results, and then Dr. Hicks will give her recommendations. At that point, we will determine if you’re a suitable candidate for the requested work,” replied Felicia.
Another essential health treatment offered at Ave is CoolSculpting. The procedure is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) area, thighs, abdomen, and flanks, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also referred to as the banana roll), and upper arm. Freezing fat cells is a non-evasive treatment that is an excellent option for body sculpting.
“It’s an applicator that vacuums our tissue onto a cold plate. If we’re working on your abdomen, you’ll feel your abdomen start to cool because the applicator pulls the tissue into the cool plates. Then, as it starts to cool, you feel a tingly sensation, and after a couple of minutes, that area goes completely numb. After we remove the applicator, we perform a Z-Wave, which is essentially a vibration massage wand that Cool Sculpts requires. They want a massage because those fat cells are just crystalized and sitting firm, so you want to break that up so your lymphatic system can naturally carry them away. Normally, people start to see results two to three months after the treatment, but I’ve had patients tell me they’ve noticed a difference within that first month,” shared Felicia.
